Are Stein Mart gift cards still valid? ›

As of September 22, 2020, Stein Mart is no longer honoring cards or merchandise credits.

Start by looking at the back of your gift card. Typically, you'll find a toll-free number you can call to discover your balance. Or you can check your balance by visiting the card issuer's site and entering your card's 16-digit number and security code.

The most common reasons are that the card hasn't been activated, the cashier is running the wrong type of transaction, the dollar amount being charged is greater than the card's balance or the credit card processing machine is bumping up the charge amount to either place a hold on the card or to allow for a gratuity.

When you enter your gift card details on this fake site, you're not just innocently checking your balance. Instead, you're inadvertently giving the scammer all they need to drain your gift card. They craft a clone of your card and transfer your balance, leaving you high and dry. And it doesn't stop there.

Check the expiration date: Look for the expiration date printed on the gift card. If it has passed, the card may no longer be valid. 2. Contact the customer service: Reach out to the customer service of the company or retailer that issued the gift card.

Despite the expiration date displayed on your Visa or Mastercard gift card, the funds on your card will never expire! The expiration date pertains solely to the card itself, not the funds.

Most gift cards will have a toll-free number on the back of them that you can call to get your balance. Flip the card over to the side with the black card strip and locate the phone number on the back of the card.

So What Happens To Unspent Gift Cards? The simple answer is that the issuing company or retailer gets to benefit from that. Once a gift card reaches its validity period and it's still unused or there is a leftover balance, the issuing company gets a certain amount back.

If the balance falls below the cut-off line, ask the cashier to pay you the balance of the gift card in cash. Some will do it automatically and others will have to call the store manager to find out how to do it.

Your physical card has not been activated. (Note: Virtual cards do not require activation.) The card has expired. Insufficient funds are available on your card to cover the purchase, which may be influenced by a pre-authorization charge.

The gift card may have been declined for another reason such as the cashier ran the card incorrectly (see above), the gift card never got activated (see below) or the dollar value being charged against the card is greater than the card's load value.

Inspect the surface of the gift card for scratches, alterations, or signs of tampering. Pay special attention to areas covering the card's PIN or barcode. Unusual markings in these areas may indicate an attempt to compromise the card's integrity.

CVV: 3-digit security code

On the back of your gift card there is a 3-digit number on the far right of the signature box. Enter in the last 3-digits to help us verify your card.

Check with the store to find out if they are redeemable. You may be able to use the full amount on the gift card or a certain percentage. In some cases, your gift cards won't be usable at all. This all depends on the store and the reason it is closing.

Some cards — especially generic cash cards from Visa or MasterCard — will start accruing inactivity fees if they're not used for a year, which eats away at their value. Inflation also makes cards less valuable over time. And if a retail store closes or goes bankrupt, a gift card could be worthless.

Federal Law Offers Protections

Under the law, a gift card cannot expire until at least five years from the date it was activated. The law also places general limitations on fees.
